The Indian state of Goa has introduced a dedicated life-course immunisation policy, marking a shift towards treating vaccination as an important part of healthcare throughout adulthood.
The policy, adopted in September 2026, covers the period from 2026 to 2036. Its first phase includes vaccination against influenza, pneumococcal disease and hepatitis B for eligible groups, including people with chronic conditions, immunocompromised individuals and healthcare workers.
The initiative reflects a broader public-health approach in which immunisation is not viewed solely as a childhood intervention. Adults can also face increased risks from infectious diseases because of age, underlying health conditions or occupational exposure.
The programme could provide a model for integrating adult vaccination more systematically into routine healthcare. Its implementation will also provide an opportunity to assess how effectively life-course immunisation can reach groups with greater health risks.
